The Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) has confirmed an ongoing investigation into allegations regarding the accommodation provided for convicted cross-dresser, Idris Okuneye, popularly known as Bobrisky, with findings pending.
Abubakar Umar, Deputy Controller of Corrections (DCC) and Service Public Relations Officer (SPRO), disclosed this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Sunday in Abuja.
Umar emphasized the service’s commitment to rehabilitation and safety through its comprehensive inmate admission process.
NAN recalls that Bobrisky was convicted in April for mutilating the naira and sentenced to six months in jail. Mr. Vincent Otse, a social media influencer and human rights activist known as Very Dark Man (VDM), later published an audio recording in which Bobrisky allegedly claimed he spent his jail term in a private apartment. The audio also allegedly captured Bobrisky stating that he paid N15 million to officials of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to drop money laundering charges against him.
On Monday, Sept. 30, the Federal Government inaugurated an independent investigative panel to probe allegations of corruption and violations of standard procedures within the NCoS. Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, who inaugurated the committee, stated that the investigation would also focus on claims that some correctional personnel provided alternative accommodation for Bobrisky.
Umar explained that inmates undergo comprehensive assessments to determine security risks, needs, and other relevant issues upon arrival at custodial centers. He outlined the process in detail, noting that an admission board evaluates each inmate to ensure safe housing and effective rehabilitation. The board consists of key officers, including the officer in charge, the medical officer, and other relevant personnel.
Umar further clarified that during Bobrisky’s admission, he was asked to declare his gender and identified himself as male. However, due to certain physical features, additional assessments were conducted to ensure both his safety and the security of the custodial center.
Regarding the ongoing investigation into the allegations of Bobrisky staying outside the facility, Umar stated: “The Minister of Interior has set up a committee to investigate these claims. Until the investigation is complete, we will refrain from further comments.”
He concluded by reaffirming the NCoS’s adherence to its standard procedures in the treatment of all inmates during admission and throughout their incarceration.
