Abia State has introduced an unprecedented culture of public sector accountability, rare in this part of the world. Under Governor Alex Otti’s leadership, governance has become synonymous with transparency, genuine engagement, and an openness to public discourse. Otti’s media interactions have moved beyond staged appearances to a platform where every Abian has the opportunity to ask questions and receive direct, sincere answers. This level of accountability is a first for Abia, allowing all citizens regardless of status or location to voice their concerns and obtain thoughtful responses.
In a memorable instance, when a journalist attempted to provoke a reaction by questioning Otti about Ben Kalu, the Governor remained composed, offering a philosophical reflection on ambition and humility, rather than being drawn into idle speculation about future political races. His calm response was a testament to his focus on current governance rather than unnecessary distractions.
Governor Otti also demonstrated his commitment to prioritizing state wide issues over local, parochial concerns. During the session, he tactfully reminded participants that Abia’s governance must address the needs of the many, not just the few. He skillfully avoided being sidetracked by questions centered on individual village issues, stressing the importance of serving the broader interest of the state.
Discipline remains a significant issue for some participants in these forums. Despite clear guidelines, certain individuals insist on monopolizing the conversation or disregarding basic etiquette, such as muting phones. Governor Otti’s patience in dealing with these disruptions is commendable, as he strives to maintain an inclusive environment where all voices can be heard without chaos.
Another recurring problem, often humorously referred to as ekwuo ekwukwa (needless repetition), surfaced during these interactions. The Governor frequently had to address the same issues multiple times because of persistent questions that added little new insight. This waste of valuable time underscores the need for more focused and concise participation in future engagements.
Despite the widespread admiration Otti has earned for his reforms, he shows no signs of slowing down. His vision remains clear: quality infrastructure, world class healthcare, efficient education systems, and a well maintained state. The Governor’s ultimate goal is a holistic transformation of Abia, making it a model of sustainable development. As more projects are completed, from road rehabilitation to improved security in places like Umunneochi and Isuikwuato, Otti continues to push for excellence in all sectors.
