Sports loving Governor of Abia State, Dr. Alex Otti OFR, has pledged continued backing for Abia Warriors Football Club. During a grand reception on Tuesday, August 6th, 2024, the Governor celebrated the team’s impressive achievement of reaching the finals of the 2023/2024 FA Cup competition, where they emerged as the runner-up, marking a significant milestone in the club’s history.
The event, held at the Government House in Umuahia, was a strong indication to the connection between the state government and its football teams. Governor Otti, who is known for his passion for sports development, assured the players, management, and board of the club that his administration would continue to support them in their quest for greater accomplishments.
The historic Achievement of Abia Warriors’ journey to the FA Cup finals was no small feat. The team battled through intense competition to secure their place in the final match, making history as the first time the club has reached this stage in the prestigious tournament. Although they did not lift the trophy, their achievement has been lauded by fans, sports analysts, and government officials alike.
Governor Otti, addressing the players and management, expressed his immense pride in their performance. “As far as I was concerned, when you got to the finals, you had won,” he said. “The least that could happen was for you to be first runner-up, which is what you are. I’m happy and I congratulate you,” he stated.
He acknowledged the disappointment of not winning the cup but emphasized that their progress to the final was a victory in itself. “When I listened to the chairman speak a little bit with regret, saying that luck ran out on you, I’m not too sure I can remember in recent times when you were the first runner-up. So, you came from the rear and you came second in the FA Cup. That’s a huge feat, and I’m happy and I congratulate you,” he emphasized.
Governor Otti’s address was not just about celebrating past achievements but also about setting the stage for future successes. He made it clear that the state government would remain a steadfast supporter of Abia Warriors, ensuring that the team has the necessary resources to compete at the highest levels of Nigerian football.
“One thing you can take away from here is that this government will continue to support you,” Governor Otti assured the players. He opined that while the state may have limited resources, his administration is committed to providing the team with the support they need. “Those opportunities we do not have, we want to give them to you,” he said.
The Governor’s pledge was followed by a concrete gesture of support. He announced a donation of N30 million from the state government to the players, a substantial sum that underscores the importance of football to the Otti administration. Additionally, he personally gifted the team N5 million through the Alex Otti Foundation, further demonstrating his personal commitment to the development of sports in Abia State.
A Shower of Donations:
The outpouring of support did not stop with the Governor. Other notable figures also stepped forward with significant contributions to the club. Former Chief of Army Staff, Lt. General Azubuike Ihejirika, donated N10 million, while Senator Darlington Nwaokocha gave N5 million. Engineer Chinedu Onyeizu, another prominent figure, contributed N2.5 million.
These donations, totaling N52.5 million, are expected to provide the much-needed financial boost for the club, helping to cover expenses related to training, logistics, and player welfare. Such support is crucial for a team like Abia Warriors, which has the potential to become a dominant force in Nigerian football with the right backing.
Governor Otti’s vision for Abia Warriors extends beyond their recent success. He encouraged the players to aspire to the greatness achieved by legendary footballers like Jay Jay Okocha and Cristiano Ronaldo. “Clearly, I can say without any fear of contradiction, the next time around, you will lift the FA Cup,” he declared, expressing his confidence in the team’s ability to bring home the trophy in future competitions.
The Governor also responded to specific requests made by the club’s chairman. Recognizing the team’s need for better infrastructure, he promised to provide a new coaster bus for the team within the next week. This gesture is part of a broader commitment to address the club’s needs gradually as the state’s resources allow.
The reception was not just about financial donations; it was also a celebration of the spirit of sportsmanship and the role of football in uniting the people of Abia State. The event was attended by several high-ranking officials, including the Secretary to the State Government, Prof. Kenneth Kalu, and the Hon. Commissioner for Sports, Sir Nwaobilor Nwadimma Ananaba, among others.
The presence of these dignitaries highlighted the importance of sports in the state’s development agenda. It also served as a reminder that football is more than just a game; it is a powerful tool for fostering unity, inspiring youth, and promoting a positive image of the state on a national and international level.
With the strong backing of Governor Otti’s administration, the future looks bright for Abia Warriors. The financial support and promises of continued government assistance are expected to propel the team to greater heights in the coming seasons.
