A tragic incident early Wednesday morning, Reverend Isaac Umurie of St. John’s Anglican Church was brutally murdered in his sleep by his son, Ufuoma Umurie. The attack took place around 2 a.m. in Okpare Olomu Community, located in the Ughelli South Local Government Area.
Reports indicate that Ufuoma, allegedly suffering from mental instability, delivered deadly matchet blows to his father’s head, resulting in his immediate death. A vigilante member reported that Reverend Umurie’s wife narrowly escaped the attack as she attempted to save her husband.
Community sources revealed this was not the first time Ufuoma had attacked his father. On a previous occasion, he severely beat Reverend Umurie but was not handed over to the police after his father’s intervention, citing his son’s mental health issues.
Gory video evidence shows the suspect using a cutlass to mutilate his father’s skull and other body parts. Neighbors could not intervene in time to prevent the murder. Following the attack, Ufuoma reportedly chased his mother, but she managed to escape unharmed.
“This is the second time Ufuoma has attacked his father. Previously, the vigilante held him after he beat the Reverend, but his father pleaded that he not be taken to the police. We heard that he is not mentally stable,” a community source recounted.
The suspect has been apprehended and is now in custody at the Otu-Jeremi Divisional Headquarters, where he faces prosecution. Delta State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Bright Edafe, confirmed the incident in a text message on Wednesday.
Reverend Umurie was nearing retirement and had been brought closer to home in anticipation of this new chapter in his life. The community is in shock and mourning the loss of a respected religious leader.
